Macrame Coasters with Hemp Cord (Video Tutorial)
Supplies needed
In this tutorial we used #48 Hemp Cord Spools, in Dusty Pink and Natural colors. It is a premium quality 100% hemp cord, perfect for macrame, as it is gentle on the skin, very flexible for intricate knotting, but strong and durable. It comes in 18 colors, is 1.8 mm thick, and is very easy to work with. For less than $20, you can make a pretty boho decorative item for your home. You can use this multipurpose cord to make macrame bracelets, necklaces, garlands, wall hangers, belts, bags, keychains, curtains, Christmas ornaments, gift tags, etc. Alternatively, you can use #10 Hemp Cord (approximately 0.5mm) or #20 Hemp Cord (approximately 1mm).
You will also need
A pair of sharp scissors will be used to cut and trim the cord.
Any type of dowel rod or a thick stick will be used to tie the knots around while weaving the design. Make sure you can slide it off the rod after completing the project.
DIY Coaster Instructions
Let’s get started on this creative journey of crafting handmade coasters. You will have a personalized finished piece for your mug in no time.
STEP 1
Take each piece of cord and fold it evenly in half.
STEP 2
Attach each cord to a dowel rod with a Lark’s Head Knot. Start by guiding the folded end of the rope over the rod.
STEP 3
Create a loop.
STEP 4
Pull the remaining cord through the loop and complete the Lark’s Head Knot. Tighten firmly.
STEP 5
Repeat with all other ropes.
STEP 6
Once you have all 16 ropes attached to a dowel, move on to tying a row of square knots by using 4 cords at a time. Take the far-right cord and cross it over the two middle pieces. Then take the far-left cord and place it over the right cord.
STEP 7
Guide it behind the two middle cords, and up through the loop.
STEP 8
Pull it tightly. Half Square Knot is completed.
STEP 9
We are now moving on to complete the other half of the Square Knot.
You will need to repeat the previous process, but in reverse – starting from the left side. Take the left cord and cross it over the middle ones to create the loop. The far-right piece goes over the left, behind the middle ones, and up through the loop. Make sure you pull each knot tightly.

STEP 10
Continue tying one full row of 8 square knots.
STEP 11
Next, you are going to create a second row of alternating knots. Leave off the two ropes on the far left and start knotting square knots with the next four ropes. Continue until you have finished the row.
STEP 12
Move on to the third row, using the same alternating method. Start with the 4 pieces on the far left.
STEP 13
Continue tying the knots to the desired length of the coaster.
STEP 14
Slide the coaster off the rod and use scissors to cut the Lark’s head loops into half, right through the middle.
STEP 15
Trim the loose ends of the coaster to the desired length, which will represent the fringe of the coaster. You can use the ruler’s thickness as a guidance for even cutting.
Note: If you plan to knot the ends of the coasters, do the trimming as a last step, as it will be easier to work with longer strings.
STEP 16
Your coaster is now complete! For a rustic finish, you can leave ends as is, or try overhead or gathering knot for a neater look.
