Valentine’s Day History and Meaning

Valentine’s Day, also known as St. Valentine’s Day dates back from Roman times. It is believed that, the Roman festival Lupercalia gave birth to what we know today as Valentines’ Day. The festival was held in mid-February and it included matchmakers trying to pair men and women randomly. The Pope forbade the further celebration of this festival. Later there were many stories about who started this celebration of romance. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 Saint Valentine’s Day to honor Christian martyrs.

The Middle Ages and the appearance of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer may take credit for the romance day we celebrate. This popular Medieval author was the first one to glorify romantic celebration. Not until the 18th century did friends and lovers start to exchange love letters and gifts, and by the 19th century printed gift cards appeared.

Today, the holiday is celebrated throughout the world.

Macrame Heart Pattern

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so it’s time to think about the perfect gift for a loved one. It's easy to find a gift at a store, but the best gift is one that comes from your heart. Check out the video below to learn how to make a macramé heart keychain as a gift this year.

Tools & Supplies

  • Keychain of your choice
  • Scissors
  •  #48 Hemp Cord cut in six pieces measured 3.5ft (107cm)
  • 3 pins

  • Tabletop

The Hemp cord I used in the video is #48 (1.8mm) Dusty Pink, but Red would be perfect as well. For a thinner keychain try using Hemptique’s #20 (1mm) Hemp Cord which comes in a large variety of pinks and reds.

Instructions for Macrame Heart Chain Beginners Project

If you are still beginner, it would be good to read our macrame knot tutorials before proceed. Once you master basic knots

Step 1 – Attach cords to the keychain

Take one tabletop and attach 3 pins in the shape of the keychain’s clasp ring to hold it in place. Then cut six cords measured 3.5ft and attach all of them to the bottom chain ring by using reverse Lark’s head knot.

Step 2 – Make double half hitch knots

This step is repeated with all the cords from both left and right. We will explain the first one and the rest you can see in the video itself. The step is as follows: Find the third cord from the left, point it down diagonally to the left and tie 2 double half hitch knots around with 2 left cords. Then repeat these two more times but change sides from left to right.

Step 3 – Tie More double half hitch knots

Before proceeding you should connect 2 cords from the middle left in the previous step with double half hitch knot. Next take the cord from far left and point it diagonally to the right and tie 5 double half Hitch knots. Repeat the step with the right-side cord and after that, repeat the beginning of this step with the middle cords.

Step 4 – Repeat!

After connecting two middle cords repeat step 2 and step 3 again, next tie again middle cords and then repeat step 2 and 3 again until forming the final heart.

Step 5 – Cut leftovers!

Use scissors to cut the cord leftovers to your desired length.

Hemp Cord – Ideal Choice for Beading and Macrame Jewelry

Hemp can be used to make all kinds of useful things like cloth, paper, wax, and rope. Hemp was once used to make all of the ropes on sailing ships. The hemp cord you’ll use for beading and jewelry-making is much thinner than a ship’s ropes, but it’s just as strong.

For crafters and jewelry-makers, it became the perfect material to work with because hemp can withstand a lot of wear and tear and will last a long time. In addition to being incredibly durable, today’s hemp cords can be found in different thicknesses and a rainbow of colors. Working with hemp cord is super easy!

Hemp cords are fantastic choice for macrame jewelry for several reasons:

  • Color – Available in many color colors including variegated options.

    Your custom text goes here

  • Texture – Polished finish for easier knotting and beading.

  • Durability and strength – Won’t break or fray.

  • Inexpensive – Choose economical Mini-Spools or 4 Color Cards for making smaller crafts, or Kilo Spools for larger projects.

  • Versatility – Great for necklaces, bracelets, anklets, earrings, and more. Hemp cord also can be combined with leather, wire, paper, and fabric to make unique one-of-a-kind pieces.
