The History ff Bookmarks

The earliest records of bookmarks date back to 6th century AD in Egypt. It was made of leather and it was attached to the cover of codex. Throughout history, its name hasn’t changed as much, however the weight of the marking tool used to be quite heavier back then. In the 15th and 16th century, a variety of new styles have been introduced, from silk ribbon, paper, cord, embroidered, and so on. Modern-style bookmarks appeared in the 18th century when people began reading more. They were designed as detached-style items, as we know them today.

If you're interested in creating a one-of-a-kind bookmark by yourself, grab some cord and follow our instructions above.

Have Questions About Macrame? We Have The Answers!

1.  How do I secure the cord for knotting?
Before you start your project, it is important to secure the cord since it has to be fastened while you are working. There are two methods you can try, based on your personal preferences and the nature of the project. You can either work vertically or horizontally.

If you prefer to knot vertically, it would be best to hang the cord by a loop or dowel and fasten it to a chair, a doorframe, or a rack. Find a place of suitable height so it does not put too much strain on your wrists and arms while you work. If you feel any type of discomfort, make sure you take a break or find a different place to work.

If you wish to work on your project horizontally, try clipping it on a clipboard, hooking it around a table leg, or fastening it to any surface with masking tape. Once you have secured the cord, you are ready to begin work.

2.  What are the most common macrame knots?

Basic macrame materials usually involve macrame cord (hemp, cotton, embroidery floss, nylon, clothesline, etc.), sharp scissors, measuring tape, and additional supplies (dowels, beads, rings, keychains, paper clips, embellishments, etc.)
4.  How do I wash and care for my macrame handicraft?
In case there is very little or no dirt at all, use mild soap and water to gently clean the affected area and then leave to air dry. Make sure you do not rub too hard when washing in order not to loosen up the knots. If you want to wash it thoroughly, you can put it in the washing machine, at gentle cycle (30°C). Always use a mesh bag for sensitive items when machine washing. You should also clean the handicraft regularly by wiping it off with a damp cloth and shaking off the dust from time to time. If the knots do loosen, you can try tightening them by pulling the thread while holding the knot between fingers.
5. How do I choose the right cord for my craft?
One of the most important things in knotting is what kind of cordage you are using. When it comes to cords, there are two different options: natural fibers and synthetic fibers. Natural fibers are usually earth-friendly and include materials such as hemp, cotton, or wool. Synthetic fibers are acrylic, nylon, or plastic and are mostly used for outdoor projects.
6. What is the best thickness of cord for bookmark crafts?
