By becoming the world’s paper, hemp was a medium to exchange knowledge between cultures. Most famous historical documents written on hemp paper are the Gutenberg Bible, Magna Carta, first writings of Declaration of Independence, and Thomas Paine’s pamphlets which encouraged the American Revolution.
Goznak Paper Mill in Saint Petersburg was also a big part of hemp paper production history because it manufactured bank notes, credit bills, stamped paper, bonds, stamps, etc.
In the USA hemp paper production ceased to exist with the 1930s prohibition since it comes from the same plant as marijuana. Those who acknowledged the eco-friendly sides of hemp, like textile industries and newspaper companies started to lobby for its further production. Farm Bill was passed in 2018 and farmers were, again, able to grow hemp and its industry was back on track. Besides being used for paper production, hemp is widely produced for cords and twine, clothes, medical purposes, food, fuel, beauty products, etc.
